The 12 Most Effective Telesales Tips

Woman doing telesales

Telesales is an incredibly powerful sales tool, especially when it’s tied into your overall marketing strategy. It can be easy to ignore an email, but people find it a lot harder to say ‘no’ over the phone.

While there are so many positives to telesales, it can be a tough gig! To help you out we’ve put together 12 practical tips to get you in the right mindset before jumping on the phone.

  1. Because you’re not there with the person physically, it’s a good idea to picture who you are talking to. If you can, look them up a website; or just imagine you are speaking with a nice friend.
  2. Smile while you are on the phone as this affects the tone in your voice.
  3. Take 5 deep belly breaths before you call.
  4. Remind yourself of your intention to be there for them.
  5. Pretend and act as though they have already bought – so you are really just asking questions, answering theirs and serving them.
  6. Take regular breaks between phone calls (preferably go for a walk).
  7. Review your sales process and the questions you will be asking the prospect.
  8. Remind yourself that even if they don’t buy, there will be another prospect along that will (another bus is coming if you miss this one!).
  9. Listen to some good music you love or watch a short video you enjoy.
  10. Bring to mind a previous sale where things went well and especially where the customer gave positive feedback and was ‘thrilled to buy’.
  11. Remind yourself that everyone likes to buy stuff – they want to buy!
  12. Remind yourself that even if they say “no”, they are not saying no to you as a person, they are just making a decision for them at this point in time.
